Wikipedia launches Wiki Loves Africa photo contest

With the aim of showcasing Africa’s diversity via pictures, Wikipedia has launched a photo contest in the continent.

The competition is launched by WikiAfrica, an international collaborative project between Africa Centre and Lettera27.

It is set to run for two months - from October 1 to November 30. Over 488 photographs have been uploaded to the contest.

Wiki Loves Africa is a competition where people from across Africa (and beyond) can celebrate the diversity, richness and complexity of this continent we live on. They can do this by taking photographs, video or audio related to that year's universal theme and entering that media into the competition.

They are partnering with Fondation Orange to launch Wiki Loves Africa. Since its official commencement on October 1, almost 500 pictures have been submitted for the competition that would end on November 30.
Organisers are enjoining people from across Africa (and beyond) to participate in the competition to celebrate the diversity, richness and complexity of the continent. Entries and submissions could photographs, video or audio contents that are related to the universal theme which is ‘Cuisine’.

“This universal, yet culturally specific theme encapsulates all that is glorious and challenging about our continent. The competition offers the ability for people from all walks of life to contribute to a greater global understanding of Africa and its complexity. Cuisine presents a visually rich, evocative subject matter that establishes identity and enables understanding,” Wiki Africa posted on its blog.
